The History of Love Locks

At first glance, putting a padlock on a bridge might not sound very romantic, but it has become a popular trend worldwide. The practice involves locking a padlock inscribed with a pair of sweethearts’ names or initials to a public fixture such as a bridge, gate or fence. The keys are then thrown away, often into the body of water underneath the bridge to which it’s locked, symbolizing an everlasting, unbreakable love.

The practice has been traced back to the early 20th century in Serbia. Love padlocks started to appear in the rest of Europe in the early 21st century, partially inspired by the 2006 book Want You. Placing these locks has led to several controversies around the world, but they are also encouraged in certain locations.

One very popular place for love locks was the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris, France. The city expressed concern in 2010 over the growing number of locks, claiming they “raise problems for the preservation of our architectural heritage.” The locks were cut off in 2014 after causing structural damage and collapsing part of the bridge due to their extra weight. The Paris bridge drew in many tourists, but also inspired the No Love Locks campaign to preserve the heritage of the city.

Americans who want to take part in this ritual can do so in a variety of locations, including the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas and Lover’s Lock Plaza in Lovelock, Nevada. While the practice of throwing the keys into the river is supposed to symbolize everlasting love, the reality is that sometimes locks need to be opened when a key is not available, which is where a professional locksmith comes into play.

Most people will have to replace a door lock at some point in their lifetime, either because they wish to upgrade to a more secure lock at their home or business, or simply because it’s time to replace a broken or worn lock. While buying a door lock in and of itself isn’t a difficult task, most people are unaware that where you purchase your lock matters just as much as what you purchase.

Simply put, your door lock holds tremendous amounts of responsibility, as it provides safety and security for either your home or business. It’s prudent to concern yourself with where you’re purchasing your new door lock so you can be confident your lock will be sturdy and secure for years to come.
