How to Safely Move a Heavy Safe or Gun Vault

Dixie Safe & Lock Service Inc. • Oct 10, 2019

Moving a Heavy Safe — Houston, TX — Dixie Safe & Lock Service Inc.
Safes are – by their very nature and purpose – big, heavy, durable boxes of metal, and for good reason. A safe must ensure no one gains access to its contents other than its owner and the people they allow. Big, high-quality gun safes or vaults often require specialized anchoring and installation, making them even more immovable.

If you’re relocating and asking yourself, “How am I going to move this huge, anchored safe?” we want to help.

There are several things you should do before, during and after your move to ensure a safe and orderly relocation of your gun safe or vault.

Schedule help
  1. Get the necessary moving equipment
  2. Plan your path
  3. Set up protection for walls, doorframes and floors before you start
  4. Check weight bearing capacity and integrity where you’re moving (if necessary)
  5. Empty and secure your guns for the move
  6. DON’T attempt some DIY safe-moving life hack (such as golf balls)

Get Help to Move Your Safe

If your safe is bolted into a concrete floor, wall studs or floor joists you may need the assistance of a safe installation expert to get it unanchored. The easiest and safest way to move an anchored safe will probably be to hire a company to un-anchor, move and re-anchor your safe at your new home or business. Not only does this solution ensure you, your friends, family and employees will remain safe and uninjured, but it also means your safe will be properly installed and anchored in its new home.

People who aren’t interested in hiring professional safe installation or maintenance experts should at least get help from friends or movers. If your safe is more than three feet tall it’s likely going to be too heavy and unwieldy for one person to move, and many even moderately sized fire-rated firearm safes are going to require more than a couple people to move safely.

Have the Right Equipment

You’ll want to have heavy-duty dollies or furniture moving equipment on hand. Know how much your safe weighs and make sure to check with whoever you’re renting or purchasing the moving equipment from to ensure it will be sturdy enough to handle the weight of your safe.

Plan Out Your Exit and Protect the Path Before You Start

The last thing you want is to get the safe nearly all the way out of your house only to run into a door or hallway that’s too narrow to navigate the safe through. Measuring corners, doorways, stairs and other obstacles beforehand will help prevent that from happening. Planning your path is also the perfect time to pad corners, put down something to protect your floors and take any other measures you think may be necessary to prevent damage to the premises you’re leaving as well as the new one to which you’re moving.

Check Weight Bearing Capacity

If you are moving a safe out of a basement or the second floor of a home or business you likely already know your stairway can handle the weight since you got it in there in the first place, but are you sure about where you’re moving to?

It’s hard to imagine anything more frustrating on moving day than spending all that time and effort getting a safe to its new home only to learn it won’t fit inside or it can’t be safely moved to where you need it. You also want to make sure the safe doesn’t plunge through a floor and cause damage or injury.

Before you start your move, decide on where the safe will be going and, if necessary, have a safe installation expert or structural engineer give it an all-clear before moving.

Empty Your Safe and Find Somewhere to Temporarily Store Your Firearms or Valuables

You should try to make your safe as light as possible before the move, which means emptying it of the valuables or firearms you store in it. Just don’t defeat the purpose of owning a safe by leaving your firearms exposed to the elements or theft during your move!

Don’t Try Golf Balls, PVC Pipes or Some of the Other Hairbrained Internet Schemes You Read

Most people have a basic understanding of how gravity and the physics of balancing works, so you can probably imagine how unstable trying to balance a safe on a bunch of golf balls would be. The same can be said for PVC pipes or other round, stick like objects. It only takes one slip for someone to be seriously injured by a massively heavy safe. Using those DIY strategies is just asking for trouble.

If you can’t find enough help and you’re desperate, you’re much better off just biting the bullet and hiring movers or a safe installation company. Keep in mind, if a friend of yours gets injured while helping you move, you could be liable. If an insured mover or safe company employee gets injured, their policy should cover it.
